Analytical & Synthesis Chemist
Soelect Inc. is a fast-growing, multi-patented clean technology startup located in Greensboro, NC. Soelect has developed an advanced lithium metal composite anode that, when combined with a solid-state or liquid electrolyte, significantly increases energy density, power and safety while also lowering manufacturing costs through our patented material design and proprietary processes.
Position Brief
• Analytical & Synthesis Chemist / Research and Development Department
• FT Position: 40hrs per week / On-site M-F / Greensboro, NC.
• Salary range: Negotiable and will be based on experience.
Qualification
• PhD in a relevant field with at least 5 years of post-degree experience, or an MS degree with at least 7 years of post-degree experience, in organic chemistry, materials (polymer) chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, or a related field within the battery industry. Experience working as a synthesis chemist in polymer materials or nanomaterials is essential.
• Expertise in organic/polymer synthesis techniques, including nucleophilic substitution reaction, benzene ring sulfonation reaction, condensation reaction, amination reaction, monomer preparation for polymerization to form high-quality polymer material, polymer cross-linking, surface coating via covalent bonding or molecular ligand grafting techniques, purification and membrane/resin synthesis etc.
• Ability to do instrumental characterization to validate the effectiveness of functionalization and covalently bonded ligands. Solid understanding and experience on spectroscopy technology including NMR, FTIR, GC-MS, AA, and surface analysis knowledge such as ESCA are also important.
• Understanding of techniques applicable to lithium extraction, separation, recovery, and refining; electrochemistry; water/ion chemistry; electrodialysis; integrating chemistry into overall hybrid/composite material design; water/ion separations; desalination; membranes; energy storage; and the lithium industry.
• Development of scalable casting and system integration for polymer and mixed matrix membranes
• Experience performing SEM, EDS, and other electron spectroscopy methods to evaluate membranes and other nanomaterials
• Familiarity with new interfaces including controlled topology, functionalities to achieve optimal affinity, and reactivity specifically for water/energy systems such as ion-specific separation
• Control mesoscopic materials architecture to achieve exquisite control of pore size and pore size distribution in membranes to tune multicomponent fluid transport by leveraging design principles
• Experience working with multiple energy material systems in a laboratory or processing setting: salts, composites, polymers, and nanoparticles
Roles and Responsibilities
• Perform analytical testing of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products using techniques.
• Develop and optimize synthetic routes for novel chemical compounds and materials.
• Prepare, purify, and characterize synthesized compounds using standard chemical techniques.
• Interpret and analyze data from experiments, prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to the team.
• Support molecular/nanoscale synthesis needs across all advanced materials, products, and technologies (i.e. direct lithium extraction materials & solid-state battery and energy storage)
• Conduct hands-on organic synthesis and materials modification experiments, achieving nanoscale scale tailoring of molecular structures and functionalities.
• Being a team member to provide support on various organic synthesis needs in creating designed multiple functional groups in homo/hetero-structured polymers and ligand grafting to nanomaterial surfaces/interfaces.
• Support development of a strategic roadmap for future applications of core technologies.
